The Options

Thank you to those who completed our survey about bus use in late 2022.

Since the survey closed we have been reviewing the feedback, collecting survey data on passenger and traffic numbers and speaking to bus operators and other key stakeholders.

We are now at the Detailed Appraisal stage of the study.  This is when we consider the options in greater detail and quantify some of the benefits and costs.  For example, what are the journey time improvements for bus users?  Will the proposals make it quicker and easier to get to destinations?

Six locations have been identified for further consideration and are detailed below.  The maps each show the number of buses per hour (VPH – vehicles per hour) which give an indication of areas which would benefit from interventions.

Please read through the proposed options and provide any feedback on the options by emailing wlba@systra.com

Alderstone Road

Delays were identified at junctions on Alderstone Road.  To address these problems the following proposals have been put forward:

  • Bus priority signals are proposed at Junction 1 (North Kirkton Road and Alderstone Road).  Bus priority signals automatically detect if buses are running behind timetable and give them priority at the traffic signals.

Livingston Centre

Delays were identified at Almondvale Avenue and Almondvale Boulevard.  To address these problems the following proposal has been put forward:

  • Lane changes at Bubbles Roundabout to widen the exit onto Almondvale Avenue to provide a bus lane in the outside lane.  This will segregate buses from queuing traffic on Almondvale Avenue.

Bathgate

Delays were identified at North Bridge Street and South Bridge Street.  In particular, the number of buses waiting at bus stops on South Bridge Street impacts on bus journey times and general traffic movements.  To address these problems the following proposals have been put forward:

  • Bus priority signals are proposed at South Bridge Street and North Bridge Street.  Bus priority signals automatically detect if buses are running behind timetable and give them priority at the traffic signals.
  • Bus stop on South Bridge Street Westbound lengthened to accommodate an additional bus which will improve bus operations.

Armadale

Delays were identified on approach to Armadale Cross.  To address these problems the following proposals have been put forward:

  • Bus priority signals are proposed at Armadale Cross.  Bus priority signals that automatically detect if buses are running behind timetable and give them priority at the traffic signals.
  • A review of bus stop layouts with scope to build out bus stops to reduce delays from entering and exiting bus stops and issues related to parked cars.  The Academy Street bus stop Westbound has been identified for bus stop build out.

Whitburn

Delays were identified on approach to Whitburn Cross.  To address these problems the following proposals have been put forward:

  • Bus priority signals are proposed at Whitburn Cross.  Bus priority signals automatically detect if buses are running behind timetable and give them priority at the traffic signals.
  • A review of bus stop layouts with scope to build out bus stops to reduce delays from entering and exiting bus stops and issues related to parked cars.  The Cross Eastbound and Union Drive Westbound bus stops have been identified for bus stop build outs.

Uphall and Broxburn

Delays were identified on Main Street through Uphall and Broxburn relating to signalised junctions, pedestrian crossings and bus stops.  To address these problems the following proposals have been put forward:

  • Bus priority signals are proposed along Main Street.  Bus priority signals automatically detect if buses are running behind timetable and give them priority at the traffic signals.
  • A review of bus stop layouts with scope to build out bus stops to reduce delays from entering and exiting bus stops and issues related to parked cars.  Broxburn Post Office Eastbound bus stop has been identified for bus stop build out.
  • Review and realignment of bus stops to support faster and more reliable bus journey times.
